The Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies with Emphasis in Sociology is designed to provide students with an opportunity to study a broad range of topics within Sociology and related courses. Issues of Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice are core to this area of emphasis. Students enrolled in Sociology courses are introduced to important and complex sociological issues impacting U.S. and global societies. The importance of effective communication and collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds is emphasized. Topics addressed in courses within the A.A. Degree may include the following: the role and impact of social institutions in U.S. society, race relations, social stratification, and social class. Also introduced are the three major theoretical perspectives, applied in Sociology, including functionalism, conflict, and symbolic interaction. Students utilize these theoretical perspectives to analyze various topics. Students wishing to earn an Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies with Emphasis in Sociology must complete each required area of emphasis course with a grade of “C” or better.
