Distance Education
The Distance education (DE) program at Evergreen Valley College offers high-quality online and hybrid courses designed to provide flexible learning options that support student success. These courses maintain the same academic standards, credit, and transferability as their on-campus counterparts.
Whether fully online or partially on campus, success in online learning requires self-discipline, time management, motivation, and basic computer skills. Students must have access to a reliable internet connection and a computer or device equipped with a webcam, microphone, speakers/headphones, and an up-to-date web browser.
All DE courses are delivered through Canvas, the college’s Learning Management System (LMS), and include regular and substantive interaction (RSI) between students and instructors, as required by federal and state regulations. Online student support services—including tutoring, counseling, library resources, and technical help—are available to ensure a positive learning experience.
Evergreen Valley College offers five different online and hybrid course modalities. All modalities meet federal and state definitions of distance education and are designed to provide a high-quality and engaging learning experience.
-
Fully Asynchronous (Fully Online): All instruction, assignments, and activities take place online in Canvas with no required class meetings. Students complete the coursework on their own schedule within weekly deadlines. An online orientation is required and may be offered live or as a recording posted in Canvas. If conducted live online, the session will be recorded and shared in Canvas for students who may not be able to attend.
-
Asynchronous Hybrid (Partially Online and On-Campus): These classes combine on-campus instruction with online learning activities through Canvas. Instead of meeting on campus every week, students complete a portion of the coursework online. An online orientation is required and may be held during one of the in-person class meetings or through a live web conference. If conducted live online, the session will be recorded and shared in Canvas for students who may not be able to attend.
-
Fully Synchronous (Scheduled Online Meetings): All instruction takes place in real time during scheduled online class meetings using a web conferencing tool (like Zoom). There are no on-campus meetings. Canvas is used to post materials, submit assignments, and communicate. An online orientation is required, and the schedule of class meetings is posted in advance.
-
Synchronous Hybrid (Online and On-Campus Meetings): These courses include both scheduled online meetings and in-person class sessions. For example, students might meet on campus one day and online another. An online orientation is required and may be conducted during an on-campus class or via a live web conference. If the orientation is held online, it will be recorded and posted in Canvas. The full schedule of class meetings (online and on-campus) is available before registration.
-
Online Blend (Asynchronous and Synchronous Online): These classes combine online instruction with scheduled online class meetings. All instruction is online, with no on-campus meetings. An online orientation is required, and the class meeting schedule is made available at the time of registration.
All distance education courses at EVC are equivalent in credit and content to their on-campus counterparts, and many satisfy general education and transfer requirements. To see current offerings and enrollment instructions, refer to the “Online and Hybrid Classes” section in the class schedule.
